St. Michael, The Original Superhero
Bedtime prayers evolve a great deal at our house, depending on the age and current mood of our children. For a while, our oldest really liked the prayer to St. Michael, which at first read may seem pretty drastic for a three year old little girl to relate to. Sometimes little kids see right to the truth of things, though. Her grandpa had given her a really cool prayer card depicting the archangel in his traditional pose – vanquishing Satan. Here is the prayer:

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle;
be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray:
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Angel of God
These days the kids recite the more traditional prayer to their Guardian Angel:

Angel of God, my guardian dear
to whom God’s love commits me here.
Ever this night be at my side
to light, to guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
