Even more desperate than the desire to start eating immediately when they sit at the table, is our kids’ desire to leave as soon as they feel done. Being the brave souls that we are, my husband and I try to delay the exodus and do Grace after meals. Everyone has to wait and [gasp!] converse until everyone else is done. For the really little ones the conversation is a bit one-sided, but it gets better. It’s pretty nice when a five-year-old asks a tired Daddy how his day was.

We give thee thanks, Almighty God,
for these and all the benefits
which we have received
from thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord.
